In 1973, the Van Ness House opened its doors. Finally, we had a place to call home, where being gay or lesbian was totally accepted. In 1973, this was no small miracle; same sex behavior was not legalized in California until 1976. Our home on Van Ness Avenue was the center of Hollywood, in a residential neighborhood, surrounded by families. Gay and lesbian alcoholics and addicts could now have access to help. substance abuse treatment, and nightly AA meetings geared directly to them
